American dream gone horribly wrong

As a product of the 40’s and 50’s, the mantra was work hard and you could achieve the dream of a good job and a home of your own. Well I went to work and got education as a professional nurse. I spent over forty years at my craft. I married and my then husband bought a home. Well we had arrived. We could afford the things we needed and lots of those things we wanted. Even after getting a divorce, my kids and I lived in a rented three bed room home until we could again get our own home. Yes this single mom, from the woods of North Carolina, was able to buy herself a house that was one she had envied while in her first home with my ex. He would not step up and take a chance at a better abode.

Having bought this house at a later age, I am still paying for it in my retirement years. Making the mortgage is hard but we are holding on. Some people have not been so lucky and have lost their homes.

Banks are getting back homes because people can no longer make the payments due to lost jobs and a myriad of other reasons. The banks are not willing to help and Obama’s program which is supposed to help, has so many qualifying rules you probably won’t make it. Plus they make you jump through so many hoops you feel like the worst failure and give up trying to work with the lender.

So where does this leave people? Well a new phenomenon has come into the picture. People losing their homes are now taking out their frustration by destroying the homes they once loved. A San Diego Policeman and his wife have been accused of tearing up their foreclosed home. There are pictures of them in the act!

This is understandable but did they think of the consequences? Maybe not or they thought like so many others before them that nothing would be done. I don’t think any of the others were caught with their hands in the cookie jar like this couple was. Now besides losing their home there will probably be criminal charges and the husband will most likely lose his job.

I feel sorry and repulsed by their action. Having your dream go up in smoke is devastating. But acting like the criminal you are sworn to catch is just as appalling!

With all the e-mail I get, I have figured out that you can tell a lot by what people send you. An acquaintance that I once had high regards for has made it her job to send me negative things about President Obama. The latest being the cost of his date night with his wife.

This e-mail outlined the cost of his security force, before during and after the date. It also detailed the cost of everything else. Yes it was high priced but I have this question. Don’t we have to pay for protecting the President and the first lady whether their name is Ford, Regan, Bush, or yes Obama? If its date night or a speech with leaders of other countries, they still need to be protected. Think something can’t happen. President Lincoln just wanted a night out at the theater with his wife and was assassinated!

These people who have so much time to count the money needed to keep the president safe should take time to join some groups that work toward making the country safe from people who make the need for all this security necessary.

Open mouth insert foot

Glen Beck did not learn from the Don Imus fiasco. If you open your mouth and insert your foot you may find people who influence your paycheck stepping away from you. Beck not known for anything less those racist remakes about Black’s recently called President Obama a racist. Since then Colorofchange.org, a group that promotes political action among Blacks, spearheaded a campaign to get sponsors to drop Beck. Well it seems to be working.

At last count 33 sponsor have distanced themselves from the loud mouth. I was unaware that companies did not always know where their ads would be played but that is often the case. They purchase a number of minutes and station often place them at their discretion. After the campaign by Colorofchange.org, large sponsors like Color, Sprint, CVS, and the retail giant Wal-mart, are saying No Thank you! Beck has a large audience and it will take more sponsors leaving to bring him down abut this may be a wake up notice to the man.

Have an opposing view, but do it with respect and stop attacking a man who is doing a job you are not equipped to do. It may not have reached the recesses of your mind, but this is not the old country where what you say rules.

Racism Thriving in America

If it wasn’t so sad I would laugh at those poor whites who think racism is a buried issue. The latest attacks on the Obama kids come from the pages of the conservative Free Republic blog. They attacked the children of the Obama with such venom and hate it seems like the 1940’s when Blacks were hung in trees like Xmas ornaments!

There were slurs calling the girls “ ghetto whores “, “thugs“, and asked such questions as when would these girls have their “first abortions.”

The children come from parents who obviously love them and their relationship is to be envied by most people. The Obama’s level of education can’t be held up to scrutiny and only be respected. What makes their children “street thugs?” What makes them so unacceptable other than the color of their skin? Both of these people are class acts and their children are a reflection of their parents.

Why isn’t some of this hate and nasty remarks thrown at the Palins? Here is a family that has an unwed mother right up front. Was she called a whore? NO! She is white and that makes her a class act? NO! Her mother was hoping to be vice president. Her lack of knowledge showed on the campaign trail when she was asked about the world geography. Ask Michelle or Barack those questions. I can guarantee you that they will be able to answer them!

Black is nothing more than a skin color. Judge the man by his work. Leave the children alone. Hate and bigotry is wrong.

Trash In The White House

I was unfamiliar with Tammy Bruce until today when I read she had called our first lady, Michelle Obama, TRASH! I had to take a step backwards and breathe deeply to keep from screaming. On what planet and what universe can this smart, sophisticated, cultured lady be called trash? What would start the tirade that made this statement?

Mrs. Obama was talking to a group of children and was trying to explain that when she was young she had been accused of trying to act white because she spoke well and made good grades. Well Ms. Loud Mouth Know Nothing I, and my children, have also been accused of the EXACT same thing!

I came from a small southern town in North Carolina. Arriving in San Diego, I found so many opportunities for my kids and myself, I enrolled us in as many things as possible to enrich our lives. There were little Miss and Mister Manners classes for my kids. We also went to the library and my 4 and 6 year old children had their own cards which they valued. They played softball and bowled and were in Girl Scouts and Club Scouts. I took pottery and sewing classes. My ex made the mistake of telling me his cousins said I was acting white. Well I lite her up (for my white friends who might not know what that means I will tell you later).

Then there was a time before Affirmative Action when I was promised a job on the phone in my home town of Asheville and when I got there the Director of Nursing said she did not know I was Black! I wasn’t sure what that meant, but I do now. But this is the way I have always talked even though I was raised in the south and even though I am light skinned, I am indeed BLACK! I also had an Internet and phone friend from Fargo, ND, who was surprised that once we talked that I did not have what he called a Black accent. He was also surprised at the parallels in our childhoods.

What I’d say if I had a chance to talk with Tammy Bruce is that you do not understand what being Black is about. And you don’t understand the pressure we face from our own community especially when we try to better ourselves. So shut up until you have something constructive and worthwhile to contribute!

Racism Alive and Well in 2009

If there is anyone who thought that because we have a black president we should lock arms and sing Cum By Ya, well get this straight. Racism is alive and well rearing its ugly head at a moments notice. Once drug out to the light of public notice, it will slink back hoping to not be noticed by those who would view this as wrong or inappropriate.

I lived through the days when we had to ride in the rear of the bus. I saw the signs that said “white and colored” water. When I tried to ask my mother what was colored water, I was hushed up for fear of being overheard. Now I have to see this now in 2009.

A white, 52 year old, Niagara Falls New York public works employee, put up a “white’s only” sign over a drinking fountain. After being caught, he is now saying its wa just a joke. He, of course, was not given the stiff sentence a hate crime would have demanded. But this is just one example of Racism being alive and well in America.

The mayor of Los Alamitos, California, sent out a mass email with a cartoon showing the Whitehouse lawn planted with watermelon. When this came to light, he freigned an “ah shucks, I didn’t lnow it was racist.” Well since you have had to step down from your job, take this time to take some sensitivity courses. But looking at this “good ole boy” it would be a waste of time and money. I have walked in the world when often I was the only Black. Of one of a few Black RN’s so most of my friends are white and they are true friends. If the perception goes out that I need help, they are there. We support each other as friends do. Yesterday I was hit with what I’ll have to explore later. A “friend” I would have defended to my death, has shown what side is she really on. I found out that she sends what could be called racist material to another friend but not to me. I know she was opposed to President Obama. Racism is alive and well where you least expected it!

Should we draw up sides and withdraw from other cultures that reach out their hands as friends? NO! But we shouldn’t forget that not every hand is extending olive branches!
