October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. This is the time of year when women are asked and encouraged to go get their mammograms. But better yet, they should get theirs while taking someone they love with them. All around the country there are activities to bring to the forefront the need to save lives.

Each year many women are diagnosed with breast cancer but through early detection lives are being saved. You should be getting mammograms after the age of 40. No need to wait until 50 as was once thought.

In the 2009, 192,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second largest killer of women. Men can also get this disease. We should also take monthly self examinations to check for changes in the shape, size, or skin texture of our breasts. And also to check to see if there is a mass. Most masses are founded to be benign. You are the first line of defense against breast cancer.

Cities around the country are doing such innovative things to bring breast cancer awareness to the public like luncheons and 5k runs. Some companies like QVC, which has been a strong supporter, has special shoes on sell during the month of October.

As women we take care of everyone else so this is a no brainer. Take care of yourself so you can be there to take care of others. Get your mammogram and take a friend.

The television has become a constant backdrop to our busy lives. Most of us have learned to only snap to attention when key words alert us to information we want to watch. This year like so many others, public service messages are encouraging us to get our flu shots. But this year there has been an added alert for the need to get a Pertussis or better known as a Whooping Cough shot.

Seasonal flu, or like last years H1N1 flu, can leave you sick and confined to bed or trying to tough it out while spreading it to others. The flu can leave you with fever, chills, coughing, a runny or stuffy nose, fatigue, aches and pains, and headaches.
The problem can become much worse if you have a chronic illness like diabetes, asthma. or a compromised immune system.

Getting a flu shot has become easier to come by this year. Many organizations are running flu clinics to get large numbers of people to come out and be protected. Neighborhood stores like Walgreen, CVS, and others, have set up centers where you can just walk in and get inoculated. Don’t tune out this message. Go get your flu shot!

The new illness breakout is Whooping Cough. This ancient illness is back and in full force. Don’t mistake this for the flu or a cold even though some of the symptoms are similar but last much longer. After the first few days when the symptoms seem like a cold or the flu, the person seems well except for a cough that can persist, often taking away the person breathe. They then have the sharp intake of breath which give the disease its name. Young children are targeted by this illness but it is often passed on by older family members who have out grown their immunity from injection given long ago.

The prevention for further outbreak of this disease is easy get your shot. Don’t tune out the alerts they just may save a life.

I was raised with a strong sense of responsibility and developed a deep maternal instinct. These two virtues can cause me to grind my back molars down to nubs when I witness people that lack either of the two virtues. After reading today’s Parade section about a young woman who desired to become a mother despite having a catastrophic genetic disorder called Type II Spinal Muscular Atrophy, it left me a bit sad and yes angry. Because of this disorder she can’t walk, has brittle bones, and suffers severe respiratory infections, that often has her in the hospital for weeks at a time on yearly basis.

Nevertheless, she refused to be tested to see if she would pass the disorder on to her children. Her retort was what better family could the child be born in if they prove to have the disease. What!

To this I say, if I had you as a mother and you passed this on to me knowing it was possible, I would not be happy to be your child. Why make life harder for your children. Life is a bitch as it is. Can you foresee that your children will have the inner strength that you have? Will they cope with the disorder as well as you have? This is not a given! Mothers should put their children before their desires.

I hope your genes won’t pass on the burden to another human. And I hope you choose not to have anymore kids. I have no more molars to loose!

The recent passing of Patrick Swayze from pancreatic cancer after a year and a half valiant fight, has left the world mourning. Swayze was beautiful inside and out. He had a way of reaching the soul of those that watched him. Bringing things into the story he was telling to make you feel the movement of his dancing as he glided across the stage. I listen to the many stars who remembered him with love and kindness. I remembered him in films that the critics found lacking. The one thing his passing has made me wonder where people’s hearts and minds are.

Suzanne Somers made a remark that made me, as well as others, very angry. Somerssaid that we lost this beautiful man because the doctors gave him chemotherapy which poisoned him. As a cancer survivor herself, this statement was so very wrong. The timing was also questionable so close after his death.

Suzanne is a big promoter of alternative treatment which is fine. But each person has to decide which route they want to take. And no one has the right to question their decision. Somers went on to defend herself by saying she did not know the person she made the remark to was a reporter. To me this made it worse. Here she was flapping her jaws to a stranger. I had always admired Suzanne for being smart and breaking the old thought that blonds are dumb. But this statement made me think that dumb blonds may not be a cliché.

Let Patrick rest in peace. With only good thoughts from his family and friends that loved him and admired the brave fight he fought to try and survive. We loved this great artist and will always remember him admiration.

Classes have or are just starting in schools across the country and the worse thing to dread is not that hard grading professor or the bully in the hallway. The H1N1 virus is lurking in the dorms and classroom to infect unsuspecting students and faculty.

We all saw the concern that world leaders had last winter and the promise of a pandemic. Only two week into the school year at Washington University, there are 2000 students out of 18,5000 that have been infected so far. Students are being asked to stay away from classes if they are sick. Drink fluids, take acetaminophen, and watch out for elevated temperatures.

If this is a sign of what is to come this winter season we need to step up to the plate and get prepared. WE should be eating right focusing on fresh fruits and vegetables to boost the immune system. Ask your doctor if vitamins will help. If you have chronic health problems getting a flu and pneumonia shot some doctors think that it might lessen the effects of other types of flu. While it won’t be effective for the H1N1 strain of virus, getting a shot is a must.

One simple but effective way to stop any germ from taking affect is washing your hands. You touch door knobs, computer keyboards and car steering wheel. These things, when tested, have been shown to be carrier of many germs. Wash your hands and carry hand wipes when out. Encourage your kids to not share food or drinks with friends.

Now is the time to put into practice all the aids to stop the flu in its track. Stay well and remember you can thrive in this challenging time.

When I heard that Michael Jackson had died I had a strong visceral reaction. I could not breathe for a few seconds and my mind‘s surge protector went into overload. I could not think a lucid thought. I hurried to write a tribute to an artist who’s music I loved and admired. I first thought I would only write about the man and his music but to not comment on some of the other news around him would be like trying to ignore the elephant in the corner of the room.

His death following a recent five hour physical in preparation for his up coming return to performing for his adoring fans seems unexpected. Death after a physical or a visit to the doctor is not unheard of but one would think if there was an underlying problem it would have been picked up then.

It is now being said that Michael’s death could have been brought on by an overdose of drugs. Michael is said to have been taking Demerol, a very strong and addictive pain medication. If he was addicted to this medication it did not happen because he woke up one morning and decided to become hooked.

Fame comes with a price tag that we mere fans can’t understand. How many of us after receiving severe burns, broken bones, strained muscles, and varies other injuries have to keep performing night after night because you have large sold out audiences waiting for you. How do they do it night after night? With their money and fame they can get doctors to give them what they need to make it through the night.

Addiction is not planned but it is a seductive mistress that will make you feel good while making you want and need more and more. It will then take larger doses to get the desired results. This is how death comes to those using drugs and just like a trap snapping shut the person is lost for all time.

How can we save those that loose their life while trying to keep up the kind of schedules these people do? Doctors who prescribe medication in irresponsible ways and their patient die should be charged with murder. Even those who are found to be writing large amounts of prescriptions should be charged with attempted murder. We need not have this crime repeated EVER AGAIN!

I wish someone would just build me a very large plastic bubble so I can stay safe from all the harmful things we are told to avoid. I am a lover of dogs. Dogs are to me the best friend you can have. They love you in good times and bad. All they ask is a good meal, fresh water, a clean bed, and lots of love and medical treatment when needed. When I read a recent article that pets are transmitting MERSA to their owners, I was upset. Is this something else I need to give up?

MERSA, the super bug, is known in formal settings as Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, and has been seen in hospitals for years. It was borne from the over and improper use of antibiotics causing them to become stronger than the nasty germs they should be killing.

The first article made it sound like dogs, cats, and even horses were just waiting to pass this super bug to adoring owners with just an innocent nip or scratch. Further research led me to understand that MERSA is being passed back and forth between pets and their owners. This now makes sense to me. Any open wound can be a gateway for the MERSA infection and once you or your pet has it, the germ can be passed on to other humans or pets.

What can we do? Wash our hands after playing with our pets. Keep any wounds clean and covered. Never demand antibiotics from your doctor. Doctors know which illnesses need antibiotics. If given antibiotics, use them as prescribed. Do not just stop when you feel better! Take them all.

There is one other thing. MERSA is found in gyms and pool areas. In fact it can be found anywhere there are people with large areas of uncovered skin that could have open wounds. Beware and when possible keep your skin covered and use disinfectant.

MERSA is here! Be proactive whether it’s with your pets or the gym. It could mean your life.

The world is in the throes of a possible pandemic called the Swine Flu. Pictures and reports coming out of Mexico, where the largest number of cases has been reported and where they are the most severe, are a flash back to fiction movies of the past coming to hunt us.

Mexico City at present seems to be the hardest hit. There have been 1348 people sickened with a death toll of 108. The president of Mexico stepped in and closed schools and public places. Pictures from this bustling city on Sunday showed a ghost town. The military is passing out masks and corralling people who appeared sick with the flu. The cases in Mexico seem to be more severe than cases of the flu elsewhere so far. There people on the streets are wearing masks.

America’s CDC, Center for Disease Control, and WHO, the World Health Organization, are working closely with their Mexican counterparts to fight this emergency. They also want to gain information to help prevent further spread of the flu. There are 12 million doses of Tamiflu are ready if needed.

We have not been spared here in the United States, but our strain of flu has been much milder. There have been cases in Texas, California, Ohio , Kansas and New York. The New York cases seem to have come from students returning from Mexico on spring break. The St. Francis School has been closed because of the flu. There have been small reports of cases in other countries.

Airlines have stepped up to the plate and dropped the usual fee for changing flights that go to or through Mexico.

No one is taking this lightly and right now everyone seems to be working together to prevent a pandemic of massive proportions. WE can all help out by washing our hands frequently. Cover our coughs not with our hands but in the crook of our arms. If you think you have the flu. DON’T go to the emergency room! Call your doctor.

The symptoms of the flu are high fever, nausea, and aches, pains, coughing, and chills. The elderly and those with health problems need to be very aware of the dangers and take proper precautions.

President Obama has promised to keep us informed as to what is going on. We all need to take care but there is no need to panic.

This last week has made me wonder shat has happen to the younger generation. Is it television and violent video games that has people killing each other. Do they really think they can rack up points and walk away with no consequences? Are these people going to pop up after the game is over? Is there no feeling of self survival? Do they not understand or care that they can loose their lives or spend time in jail? Are they at such a tender age already thinking life is not worth living?

You would think that getting up on Sunday, dressing in your finest and going to church to worship, would give you a shield of protection. This did not happen at First Baptist Church in Maryvilles, Ill. Rev Fred Winters was gunned down. Several shots were deflected by his bible before he was mortally wounded. It is now being said that the shooter, a man named Terry Sedlacek, had suffered from Lymes disease and his mental status had deteriorated. One doctor said he never knew Lymes’ to cause that level of violence.

A mass killing of 19 people in Germany came to light this week also. The Europeans have often called us a “gun happy nation” but it looks like they are now imitating us. What a pity. A 19 year old ex student returned to carry out the deed in Stuttgart, Germany.

Not to be outdone, a young man travelled through two small towns in Alabama killing his own mother grandmother and others before being killed in a shootout. Michael McLendon was thought of as quiet and polite.

These are just three examples of the violence around us. Growing up, I think we knew that death was final. We also knew that whatever we did right or wrong would come back to visit us. Has a world of so much murder and killing, fed to our children at early ages, desensitized them to the point where life has no value?

I can’t answer this but neither can people on the scientific level. They can’t even decide just what violence is. Whatever the reason, we must try to find an answer quickly. These incidents have happened far too often to ignore!

Most of my years in nursing were spent in the mental health field so I am familiar with the problems of caring for patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Upon hearing that a wrestling legend had killed his roommate, my heart went out to the families and to a man who can’t be held responsible for what he has done.

Verne Gagne once entertained the sports world with his time in the square ring. Now due to a disease which he did not bring upon himself, he has killed his nursing home roommate.

Where does the fault lie? As a nurse who had to assign rooms to patients, it takes more than just putting A with B. Due to the need for more and more money, hospitals think less about the needs of where patients should be placed, and more to how many they can fit in a room.

The hospital should have known that Gagne had the ability to hurt someone and that his disease made him capable of following through with aggressive behavior. He is not only a threat to other patients, but to staff as well. Nurses on Psychiatric units are at risk everyday they go to work.

I put this right at the feet of the nurses and administrator. If you take in a patient, do right by them! Make sure they are safe and that they can’t hurt themselves or someone else.

If you have read my blog before, you know that I have a number of health problems from being a cancer survivor to a sufferer of Fibromyalgia. Most people and doctors acknowledge my other problems, but when it comes to the Fibromyalgia, even my orthopedic doctors say there is no such thing. I respect this doctor because he worked with me through ten surgeries for my cancer stricken arm, but he won’t discuss my Fibromyalgia. Going so far as to say that I don’t have the personality for the disease. Why? Because I don’t or won’t give up?

I have had to struggle for years to work through the pain and only five years ago stopped working. They told me if I had another problem with my arm, which had cancer, they might have to cut off my arm. Would I still be working with my Fibromyalgia? YES! I have a very high pain threshold. And pain and I are old friends. But what hurts most is having people you hope will help you, look at you as if you are not sick. Just because there are no tests the doctors can look at and say “oh yes this is what you have” doesn’t mean it’s not real. The days when it hurts so bad to take a breath, I wish I could trade places with these learned men and women!

I know there are a few new medications that might help with the pain. But after reading the side effects, I choose not to take them. Does this limit what I can do? Yes ! I can’t make plans too far in advance because I never know if my pain will allow me to do things. Would I like a better quality of life? Well I prefer not to go around in a fog but that’s just me.

I would like to see doctors get together and realize that when you have very large groups of unrelated people with he same symptoms, there must be something going on. What you call it doesn’t matter. Its real! Give the sufferer the care they need without the doubt we now see in your eyes.

How many times in a country where the knowledge of food safety is readily available to companies, does the recall of tainted foods have to go on? These unsafe foods cause sickness, and yes death. This is unacceptable!

Right now we are in the throes of having one of societies best loved foods, Peanut Butter, recalled due to 508 cases of illness and eight deaths. And one family pet was also a victim.
The company that is responsible is Blakely Georgia Company. I watched the television interview of a young man fired for whistle blowing about the filth found in the plant. He stated that there were often rat droppings around and that the roach problem was huge. He also stated that he saw a rat roasted with the peanuts. For reporting this, he lost his job. The company had been cited for past infractions of cleanliness problems but failed to clean up their act.

Why was nothing done? Was it a case of having to spend too much money to solve the problem or was it just a case of indifference? Whatever the reason, the penalties should be stiff and swift. No small monetary fine is appropriate. Maybe a charge of attempted murder would make it more real to do the right thing!

Peanut butter is the stable of young children everywhere as well as older fok who don’t want to cook. This same group of people are the ones whose systems can’t take the onslaught of an attack of Salmonella.

There has got to be a better way to make sure companies are not killing those we love. Hire more inspectors and shut down plants that don’t make the grade.

Where they and their children will be abused by immature, worthless men, who can’t or wont live up to their responsibilities.

Why are you not protecting yourself and your born or unborn children? How can you bring children into the world if you, yes YOU, can’t support them? I know it’s supposed to be a two way deal. But history has proven you will likely be forced to take on this burden all by yourself!

Practice safe sex! Get and use birth control. Or better yet, keep your legs crossed! No way should you be having babies with men who can’t or won’t share in taking care of them. Loving someone is great but mature love comes with responsibilities.

1. Get to know the person, WELL, before you have sex with them.
2. Use birth control, including CONDOMS! The pill can’t protect you from sexually transmitted diseases!!!
3. Do not have children until it is a joint decision and desire by both parties.

Get a gripe ladies!! Your life and the life of you children may depend on it!

Ten or fifteen years ago we can all remember standing in line at the grocery store and reading the headline of someone losing half their face to a killer infection. Well it’s no longer fiction. It is now here, going strong in our hospitals, schools, and gyms.

MRSA or Methicillian Resistant Staphylococcus Aurous, was once thought of as being something only found in hospitals. But that is no longer true. Today this disease is divided into hospital acquired or community acquired MERSA.

Hot spots to get MERSA are gyms and workout rooms. The papers are full of professional athletes such as Kellen Winslow Jr., Tom Brady, Jason Taylor, and Peyton Manning who are fighting this illness. And where did it come from? Most likely the workout room.

How is this disease being spread and what can be done to protect yourself? First at home clean, your showers and floors regularly and be aware of any cuts on your body and keep them covered. At the gym ask what is being done to prevent the spread of this potentially deadly disease. You can help protect yourself by carrying disinfecting sprays to spray down equipment before you use them. Another thing is to wear workout gloves. Always wear shower shoes to and from the shower. While getting dressed sit on a towel and not on the bench. If the gym provides towels make sure they are clean before using them. A hassle for sure. You might feel a little strange at first but remember this is your life we are talking about. If you don’t take care of it who will? These small steps can help you avoid MRSA.

You might want to know what this monster disease is all about and where did it came from. Well it’s an organism waiting on the skin to find entrance in any break in the powerful barrier named our skin. What has made this germ so virulent? That’s easy. We have used antibiotics so indiscriminantly that the germs have fought back and have become resistant to a large number of available medications.

There are antibiotics that will cure this disease. Vancomycin and Linezolid are just a few. These drugs have to be used with caution and as prescribed. We are in this mess because we have for a long time used antibiotics in ways not needed and not for the necessary length of time. Now we have a deadly antibiotic resistant organism.

We now have to protect ourselves by keeping even the smallest break in the skin covered. And when using the gym, pool area, and other communal places where people have large areas of exposed skin, make sure you are making every effort to clean your environment. Being proactive is not a suggestion. It’s a MUST!

Have you ever done something so stupid that later you had to just sit and shake your head? Well today after watching the new television show, The Doctors, which has condensed but often good medical subjects, I was left shaking my head and going Oh My God!

I worked thirty-five years on the 1100 to 0730 shift, full time, while trying for all the over time I could get. So a shift would often be 1100 pm to 330 pm the following day. I would sometime leave work at 330 pm to return at 1100 that night. So to say I was sleep deprived is like saying Denzel Washington is handsome. That goes without saying.

During the early seventies my husband was in Vietnam. It was not unusual for me to return to work on three or three and one half hours of sleep. Because I still had to be mom to my two kids. I can remember one night finishing the routine work and was talking with my nursing assistant. She said the phone rang, I answered correctly, talked with the person, hang up, and stared at her. The next thing I remembered was her asking if we were getting a patient. What are you talking about I asked? I had to call the ER to get a clarification about what was going on. I was sound asleep but functioning correctly.

How does this tie in with the TV show? They had two students that had been up 30 hours without sleep or caffeine. They tested their reflexes, motor skills, and memory. They failed the entire test! Can you imagine what I was really like? I didn’t then or now, drink caffeine except in diet sodas. So that left me without any boost to my mental facilties. The doctors did say you may get a boost from caffeine, but it doesn’t help the problem of being sleep deprived.

Would you believe I only had one car accident in all that time and that was because someone rear ended me? That does not say that I wasn’t lucky and really blessed. There was an angel sitting on my shoulder all those many years. How I worked that shift for so many years I don’t know. I do know that after four years of being retired, I still have problems sleeping. No one should be allowed to work that many years on the night shift.

San Diego and other cities are being attacked by Tuberculosis. What was once an easily treatable disease is on the rise and becoming harder to cure. This is because there are now strains of TB that have become resistant to the usual treatments.

Tuberculosis is an airborne disease. It can only be spread from person to person through coughing, sneezing, and speaking. It takes only two weeks for a person to become sick. Not all people infected with the germ get TB. Only about 10% will come down with it. The germ can lay dominant for years, only to become active at an inopportune time.

Tuberculosis can come in many forms attacking the lungs and many other parts of the body. The increase in cases of Tuberculosis is due to the large number of people with immune weakened bodies and shrinking resources for healthcare follow ups. The influx of people from Third World countries is helping to re-introduce Tuberculosis. The disease is now becoming resistant to the multiple antibiotic treatments available. The poverty worldwide has us seeing three million cases a year.

The symptoms of Tuberculosis are: night sweats, unexplained weight loss, and bringing up bloody sputum. X-rays and sputum cultures are used to positively identify the disease.

Treatment like the disease is slow. It takes many months and often multiple drugs are needed to cure this illness. Treatment once started must be continued to prevent the germs from becoming resistant and spreading to others. We must be vigilant in watching out for these symptoms and fighting this disease. It is an insidious disease and can be a killer.

Gas prices are at an all time high, food prices are going through the roof, and the money market is leaving us all with less to count on in a pinch. How is a person going to stay cool calm and collected?

The question is what can we do to stay in a calmer state of mind? Stress can kill! A strssful state of mind can raise your blood pressure and lead to a number of catastrophic illnesses. If you suffer from pain ailments like back problem and other ailments, look for ways to change how you think. Think positive!

Most of us have been down the roads of life and think well this is just one more thing I have to handle. No! I think in my six decades of life this is the worst time I have been through but I know I am going to survive this and here is how.

I am taking a good look at my diet. WHAT? Yes! Out goes the junk and in comes the fresh fruits and yuck veggies. Lean meat and fish will be added to my meals.

The easiest thing is that I will be beginning to take deep breaths of air. This is important as deep breathing will help to relax you and that’s what we want.

Fellow couch potatoes unite! Lets get out there and move our bodies. A short walk. Sswimming, the treadmill. Whatever gets you up and moving. I don’t expect you to run any marathons, yet, but check with your doctor and see what would be good for you.

Last but most important, give it all to God. He will bring you through this like all the other things we have suffered in the past.

October is breast cancer awareness month. One out of eight women will be affected by this brutal and demoralizing disease. That means that 200,000 women will be affected. The good news is that 160,000 will be cured. Even though we think of this as a female disease let it be known that men are affected also. Over one thousand men in this country are affected each year.

What can we do? Well first we must get do our monthly breast checks. This includes checking for lumps and changes in the shape of the breast. Next we should be standing in line to get our mammograms each year. Support events that fund research. Many of these are fun and gives you a chance to buy products of which a part of the money will be given to cancer research.

One fun sell in on QVC where you can buy high name designer shoes and the net cost will go to the Susan G. Komen Center. HSN, another shopping network, is giving a portion of the money from selected products to the cause.

Think pink! Wear a pink ribbon during October. This will start conversations about the subject when someone asks you what the ribbon is for. Get moving! Each of us will be touched by this disease either personally or though someone we know and love.
