What I am most thankful for

This year of my life has been the most difficult of my sixty plus years. But as my son and sister in law most aptly put it, I still have much to be thankful for.

The first and most important thing that I am thankful for are my son and daughter. Most mothers are proud of their offspring but my heart swells so much when I think of my son who is fighting kidney failure with such style and grace I can only wonder where he gets his strength. Mike you are my Hero! His sister has amazed me. She has taken my son and I under her wings and guides us through the mine field of poor health. Without her help we would not survive well. This is our angel.

You have read about my sister-in-law before but recently she has shown that not only is she beautiful on the outside but she has a heart so big the Astrodome would not hold it. She is caring for my brother who is recovering from serious back surgery. Now this is a man raised with three sisters and a mother. Need I say more? She goes above and beyond the call of duty even for a wife. She is caring for him and tending nurses need to take lessons from her. Kudos to this fine lady.

I had never been a joiner of social groups till five years ago when a group of nurses I worked with or knew through ones I worked with, formed a Red Hat group. These are the finest women you could ever call your friends. We are sisters drawn together first by occupation but mostly by love for each other.

I love each and every one. Gail my little angel, always there when you need her. Kate is the friend who is a rock when life tosses me about. She listens to my ranting. Then there is Deb who I must have been separated from at birth. I am black and reared in the hills of North Carolina. She is white and raised in Ohio but our life experiences are so much alike we surprise ourselves. Next is Rita who is a southern bell. I met her in 1975 and we are still friends after all these years. A nicer person I could not imagine. Then there is Anita. She is my animal loving, people loving, caring, flower child. Just seeing her walk into a room makes you smile.

All of these ladies and I had the great pleasure of having Thanksgiving dinner together this week. Thank you my friends for being a great blessing to me. I love you all.

There were some of our friends that could not make it. I would like to mention them because we all love them very much. There is Cheryl my beautiful, should be plus size model, girl. Her goodness shines through as she comes into a room. We missed you and hope to see you soon. Then there is my Joan. Joan is my hero. She works and takes care of so many of her friends when they are in need. She puts us all to shame with her ability to care for others.

These are just a few of the people in my life that I am grateful for. God has been good to me to have this many people to love and who love me. I love all of you.

Happy Thanksgiving.

And then there is Miss Lillie…need I say more. She is the solid rock, leader, hands on get in your face queen of this group of ladies destined to hold us all together thru thick and thin. She does not falter thru the worst of times and she keeps all of us laughing with her stories from years gone by. Yes, we are twins separated from birth and I have the scars to prove it. Our childhood is so blended…that it is as if we lived across the street from one another when we were growing up. Lillie, you are a dear-dear friend to us all and thank you for “A Nurse’s Journey” it has taken all of us on a special ride thru time. Happy Holidays.
