Dying to be thin

I have chronicled my fight with weight and know what its like to want to be thin. I have gone to some extreme methods to try to lose weight due to the pressure I put on myself and the pressure I received from society. I can remember a fad that was going around in the 70’s where you had to go to your doctor’s office six times a week for a shot that was made from the urine of a pregnant cow. Then you were limited to 500 calories a day plus you could not touch or use anything that had grease in it. I remember gaining weight after combing my daughters hair and applying the usual hair preparation.

During the same time I was feeling so good from my rapid weight loss that I decided to plant an orange tree in my back yard. The dirt here is dry and hard so starting to dig a hole on 500 calories was too much. I woke up after fainting and crushing my poor little orange plant. I still laugh because during the same time I was cooking cabbage for my kid’s dinner. Before I could stop myself I had eaten the whole pot of vegetables.

I did loose 35 lbs in 7 weeks. It made quite a difference on my short frame. But the person my ex-husband never even mentioned the new me upon his return from West Pac. Was I lucky to not have ruined my health on that silly diet? You can bet your sweet Sara lee cakes I was!

Recently two women lost their fight with fat and their lives going on a fad diet called Lighter Life. One was losing weight for her wedding. This is sad! No wedding no life. Her husband fell in love with her fat. Now he is left to wonder where he failed to let her know that her weight was not important to him. I know that being overweight is unhealthy but trying fad diets can and do kill.

There is no magic bullet. Weight loss comes from sensible eating plans and getting the mind set that food is not to be used as a crutch. Those of us that are greatly overweight have the same mind set as drug addicts. And in needing to fill the void we try to fill it with food. We just need to fill it with something more healthy.

Get slim if it’s your choice. But do it the right way.
