Bring out the Lifeboats and the sandbags

In San Diego we either have the fire season or the rainy season. Since we have had several dry seasons, most San Diegans were welcoming some rain because the mayor was threating to ration the water.

This week we had the first major downpour. For those of you not familiar with what happens in the semi desert when it rains, the ground soaks up as much water as possible then it begins to run off. That’s when it get ugly. Dry river beds fill up and neighborhoods in low lying areas become watery death traps.

San Diegans who are use to tooling around town fail to retreat when they see roads covered with running water. They then get stuck and have to be rescued. Oh yes we have lifeguards that work during this season to get people off of the roofs of their cars once they have gotten themselves in this mess.

City planners often allow builders to use land in dry river beds to build Condos and when it rains they become flooded as well. The streets that these Condos are on become a public nuisance.

This past week we lost three people to the rain. We are looking for another storm in two days. So when I say bring out the lifeboats, it’s not a joke.

As for the sandbags, those of us who live with yards with hills have to look out for mud slides. To much rain can bring these same hills into your living room, or worse yet, your house falling down.

This sounds bad and it is. But would I live anyplace else? Hell no!!! San Diego is still the greatest city to live and raise a family in. Where else can you go from the beach to the snow in one 8 hour period!
