Black Friday – Shame on a Modern Society

This weekend kicked off what most merchants hope will be the season to put money in their coffers. This year it is more important than ever due to a flagging economy that people get the best deal for their money. But do we really need another toy or electronic item at the cost of life and limb?

Stores are opening earlier and earlier so that people will come out in droves to shop. This puts shoppers at risk for those who lie in wait knowing that these same people have money to spend. Lines are formed around the building waiting for opening times that offer a small amount of items at a ridiculously low price to bring people in the doors. Once the doors are open there is a stampede and the people opening the doors are run over and yes even killed. Those people in the front of the line not young enough, strong enough, or with small children, can be knocked down and run over. What for? For another thing that is not needed and could have been bought somewhere else? Maybe it would have been a few dollars more. But if I had been in line where that poor worker in New York was killed in the stampede, I would not be able to look myself in the mirror this morning. And for some shoppers to continue to shop and then complain about being forced to leave is unconscionable.

My thoughts and prayers go out to that young man’s family who was killed and may each of us take time to think what this season really means. Peace on earth and good will to mankind. Not getting a deal on a gadget that will be gathering dust by February!
